Peace Katrina
By Visual Artist Grey Cross
This massive wall sculpture measures approximately 5' x 4' on a 1" deep frame. It represents Hurricane Katrina as she made landfall in Lousiana in August of 2005. It was made using a radar image taken in the final hour before she came on land. She is made from raised grout overlaid with acryllics. Below her is a true to scale map of the Gulf of Mexico and adjacent areas. Several of the major cities within her reach are highlighted on the map.
Having lived in New Orleans during that time, creating the piece was emotional but healing. The name "Peace Katrina" was decided upon because the city had made peace with the giant storm in the years after and it became part of the mythos of the city.
Since she was first created, hurricanes have become a regular facet of my work and often she up in the imagery I create.
